Passersby were offered small cups from a tray for a special ‘dégustation’ outside Quebec provincial offices in Gatineau Monday afternoon.

But the cups didn’t hold wine, it was tap water.

Chelsea residents held the mock water “tasting” to protest municipal affairs’ inaction on a new facility that would improve the town’s water quality.

The province still needs to sign off on the facility, even though Chelsea has already approved construction to begin in 2012 for the $22-million filtration plant and pumping station that has already awarded contracts and secured funding needs.

Half of Chelsea’s sewers are reportedly failing and polluting the aquifer, an issue originally identified by Quebec’s environment ministry in 2007.

Tap water has been called undrinkable by many residents, causing them to buy bottled water and spend money to pump out their own septic tanks.
