It’s just about the most Canadian activity you can imagine.

Ottawa-area police and Aboriginal youth embark on a friendly canoe trip down the Rideau Canal and Ottawa River Wednesday for the Flotilla for Friendship’s 14th year.

An opening circle and water ceremony kicks off the day at 10:15 a.m. at Dow’s Lake. At 11 a.m., the flotilla launches and makes its way along the Rideau Canal. At the locks downtown, canoes are portaged to the Ottawa River.

The flotilla continues along the river until it reaches Victoria Island, where a feast is being prepared for 1:30 p.m. Police and youth will eat, then braid sweetgrass together. The closing circle will be conducted by an elder at 2:30 p.m.

Officers from RCMP, OPP, Sûreté du Québec, Gatineau, Lac Simon, Akwesasne Mohawk Police and Ottawa Police Service are paddling with youth participating in programs at Odawa Native Friendship Centre, Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, Minwaashin Lodge and the Ottawa Inuit Children’s Village.
