Ontario Provincial Police announced this week an online reporting system that people can use across the province to report specific non-emergency crimes without going into a police detachment or calling the police.
Lost property, theft from vehicles and property damage are some of the crimes that citizens can now report online without police having to send an officer to take the report using what the force calls “Citizen Self Reporting.” Crimes that don’t involve an injury, a suspect or any physical evidence are ideal for online reporting, but the OPP says an officer will continue to attend scenes if the complainant requests one.
“It is expected that Citizen Self Reporting will be beneficial to both the public and the police. It will provide a convenient alternative to the citizens of Ontario, while allowing frontline officers to focus their efforts on other enforcement and crime prevention strategies within our communities,” OPP said in a news release.
“By providing people with another option for reporting crimes, the OPP is hopeful that more incidents will be reported, resulting in the collection of information to develop future crime prevention initiatives.”
Ottawa police also launched their online reporting tool earlier this year.
Ontarians can access online reporting on the OPP’s website at opp.ca
