Quebec’s municipal affairs ministry has given Chelsea the go-ahead to begin constructing new wastewater and potable water systems, the municipality has announced.
The $23-million project will establish new wastewater collection systems and a distribution system for potable water. It addresses pollution and tap water problems that have persisted for several decades, according to the release.
Earlier this week, Chelsea residents had held mock water tastings outside the ministry’s Gatineau office in protest of delays for the infrastructure’s approval.
The project’s approval was held up by complaints registered in 2012 regarding the process the ministry had followed to establish by-laws relating to the project.
A construction schedule is now being finalized. Residents can find more updates on the municipality’s website.
