The city will retire OC Transpo Route 76 in recognition of those who died in last fall’s fatal bus-train collision near Barrhaven, Mayor Jim Watson announced Friday.
In an email to councillors, Watson said he has been consulting with the families involved for the past two months and wanted to reach a consensus on how best to remember their loved ones.
“We do not want to do anything that could put any one family into an uncomfortable situation at any point in time,” he said.
He said the families agreed on the retirement of route 76 and a commemorative plaque or marker at a to-be-determined location. There wasn’t agreement amongst the families on other ideas that were mentioned, he said.
The Sept. 18 bus-train crash at a level crossing near the Fallowfield Transitway station crash sheared the front off the Route 76 bus and killed the driver, David Woodard, and passengers Connor Boyd, Kyle Nash, Karen Krzyzewski, Rob More and Michael Bleakney.
Four lawsuits have been filed against the city and Woodard’s estate since the crash. More and Bleakney’s families have filed lawsuits, as have two surviving passengers.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
Flags at city buildings will fly half-mast on the one-year anniversary of the collision. There will also be a minute of silence at the previous day’s Transit Commission meeting.
