Despite the soggy Sunday weather in the capital, soccer fans are eagerly awaiting the showdown between Germany and Argentina in the World Cup finals.

For those in search of the beautiful game, the clash between the two storied teams begins at 3 p.m. and there will be a big screen set up downtown at King Edward Street and Rideau Street.

Leading up to the finals at Maracanã stadium, eyes will be fixed on Germany’s Miroslav Klose, one of the top scorers in the history of the tournament and four-time player of the year, Argentina’s Lionel Messi.

Messi posted a rallying cry Saturday on Facebook calling the game, “the most important match of our lives for our country.”

“We knew it was possible. Our people, the Argentineans, they have carried us here. But the dream is not over yet, tomorrow we want to win and we are ready,” Messi wrote.

The two teams have faced off against each other twice in the finals. In 1986, Argentina took home the World Cup trophy with a 3-2 win. Four years later, Germany avenged their defeat with a 1-0 victory.

Earlier in the tournament Germany emerged from the drama of pool play, which saw an early exit for Portugal and their star forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The United States managed to advanced to the Round of 16, but could not be saved by the heroics of their goalie Tim Howard.

Other teams such as England, Italy and Spain that were expected to make a strong showing at the World Cup exited with a whimper.

Second-seeded Germany then dismantled Brazil in humiliating fashion, 7-1, in the semi-finals with a barrage of goals Tuesday that caught their defenders off guard. The hosts, were without their captain Thiago Silva and forward Neymar, who was sidelined due to a fractured vertebra.

Brazil also ended up losing their consolation third-place match on Saturday to the Netherlands by a score of 0-3.

Third-seeded Argentina took the top spot, with a 3-0 record in their pool, which contained Nigeria, Iran and Bosnia. They squeaked by the Netherlands in Wednesday’s game with the help of their goalkeeper, Sergio Romero, when the game came down to a series of penalty kicks.

For those looking to place their bets on which team will hoist the World Cup trophy, there has been no shortage of soothsaying animals from camels, kangaroos, turtles and elephants, though none have come close to Paul the Octopus, who correctly predicted all of Germany’s seven games.

Bob, a two-toed sloth, who resides at the Toronto Zoo, thinks Germany will hoist the World Cup trophy over Argentina. He previously predicted incorrectly that Brazil would beat Germany, but many people and animals alike could not have seen that one coming.
