Commuters take note: lane closures on downtown stretches of the Queensway could cause slowdowns over the next several weeks.

From Monday until Saturday, off-peak lane reductions are planned between Kent Street and the Highway 417/148 split, in both directions, and between the Parkdale Avenue and Rochester Street exits.

Off-peak lane reductions are also planned for Highway 174 between the Montreal Road and Blair Road exits.

Overnight highway closures are planned between Lees Avenue and the split at 15-minute intervals between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. until Saturday. Ontario provincial police will be on scene to direct traffic, but drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes.

A swath of ramp closures are also scheduled around the St. Laurent and Vanier exits.

The eastbound Highway 417 on-ramp from southbound St. Laurent Boulevard is now closed until August 11. Starting Monday, July 21, the northbound St. Laurent Boulevard on-ramp to the westbound 417 will also be closed for four weeks.

Night ramp closures are expected to make east end driving a little trickier throughout the week.

The eastbound 417 on-ramp from southbound Vanier Parkway is set to be closed nightly until Friday. Until Saturday, the westbound 417 on-ramp from both directions of St. Laurent Boulevard and the eastbound Highway 417 off-ramp to St. Laurent Boulevard are expected to be closed nightly.

Meanwhile, the westbound Highway 417 off-ramp, the eastbound 417 on-ramp from northbound Vanier Parkway and the westbound 417 on-ramp from southbound Vanier Parkway are also expected to be closed nightly until Saturday.

However, southbound on-ramps to the westbound 417 won’t be simultaneously closed at Vanier and St. Laurent.

All this to say: nighttime drivers who expect to be on the highway east of downtown this week should take caution and plan alternate routes, if possible.

Most of the work creating lane and ramp closures is part of the city’s expansion of Highway 417, which adds a new lane in each direction between Nicholas St. and the split.

The expansion, which began May 2013, is planned to help facilitate public transit during LRT construction, from 2015 to 2018.

As always, the city cautions that roadwork is weather-permitting and warns some of the work may extend later than the dates listed above, if necessary.
