Ottawa police have officially opened the first of three collision reporting centres, this one at 211 Huntmar Drive.

Collision reports in the west end will be processed at the centre, with motorists given police report numbers to bring with them, rather than having police officers come to the scene of every collision.

If more than one vehicle is involved in an accident, drivers can report to the centre at different times, though still as soon as possible, or within 24 hours to avoid a police investigation on failing to report a collision.

People who are involved in collisions can contact the police communications centre at 613-230-6211 to find out if the collision can be reported through the centre.

The centre is now open seven days a week. Two more locations, at 474 Elgin St. and 3343 St. Joseph Boul., are set to open by the end of 2014.

About 70 per cent of collision will be redirected through the centres by the end of the year.
