Ottawa will play host to Athletics Canada’s Senior/Junior Canadian Track and Field Championships in 2017 and 2018, Mayor Jim Watson announced Thursday. The games will be held at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Mooney’s Bay and feature a four-day competition for “the nation’s best Olympic and Paralympic athletes,” Watson said. The games serve as a selection trial for Canada’s national teams. The city estimates the event will generate about $3 million in economic benefits in each of the two years. It plans to invest $300,000 upgrading the Terry Fox facility.

Ottawa last hosted the event in 2006.

“Ottawa is one of the best organized and most enthusiastic host cities,” Athletics Canada CEO Rob Guy said in a statement. “We had a great Championship when we hosted it here in 2006, and I am confident that the 2017 and 2018 Championships will be among the best ever. I hope everyone in Ottawa comes out to see and cheer the best Olympic and Paralympic athletes from across Canada.”

More to come
