Members of the University of Ottawa’s men’s hockey team — which has been suspended amid a police investigation into an allegation of sexual assault in Thunder Bay — can apply to other schools for next season.

The decision by Canadian Interuniversity Sport, the governing body for university sports, to lift existing transfer rules was made in a special board meeting.

“I think it gives a chance for the student athletes now to get on with their lives and to keep pursuing school and hockey,” said Pierre Lafontaine with Canadian Interuniversity Sport.

The Gee-Gees hockey team was initially suspended on March 3, the same day the university announced a third party allegation that a woman had been sexually assaulted while the team was on a road trip to Thunder Bay.

On June 25, University of Ottawa president Allan Rock extended the suspension for a full year and fired the team’s coach, Réal Paiement.

Rock said an internal review showed that the behaviour of some of the players “did not meet the university’s expectations of our student athletes” and “was not in keeping with the university’s values.”
