Ottawa Redblacks fans hoping to tailgate before the team’s historic home opener Friday night might have to relax their definition of the term.

Traditional, American-style tailgating involves fans socializing around the open tailgates of vehicles. It usually features grilled food and adult beverages, and takes place in the parking lot outside a stadium.

At Lansdowne’s TD Place, the only parking is underground and is reserved for people with pre-purchased club and suite tickets. But that doesn’t mean there’s no party.

The CFL’s newest franchise will be holding what team president Jeff Hunt calls a “Redblacks version of tailgating” starting three hours before kickoff.

“Tailgating is really just fans socializing before a game and, to a lesser extent, after the game,” Hunt said. “We’re going to have that type of experience.”

Brian Peterkin, right, with friend Keith Maheux, plans to head to TD Place
early for the pre-game festivities on Friday.

That idea is going over well with diehard fans, it seems. Brian Peterkin, who was at Thursday’s Redblacks pep rally at city hall, said he and his girlfriend will be at Lansdowne nice and early on Friday.

“We’re bolting down there right at 4 p.m., and we’re going to take in the whole atmosphere,” he said.

The CFL is in Peterkin’s blood; his father was a statistician for the Rough Riders. He said he has always wished that there were a tailgating experience at Lansdowne. Now, he’s planning to be one of the first ones there, although he will have to wake his girlfriend up because she’s working a night shift.

“It’ll be worth it,” he said. “She knows how important it is to me, and she’ become a bit of a fan as well. She watches the games.”

The free party will be held on the south porch, which is between the Aberdeen Pavilion and Lansdowne’s new urban park, which opens next month.

Nova Scotia rockers The Trews are playing from 5 to 6:30. There will also be a number of local food trucks serving food, and the party will be licensed.

There are also activities for kids; the event square on the Bank Street side of the Aberdeen Pavilion will feature four inflatable bouncy structures. Post-game, at the south porch, a DJ will keep the party going until 11 p.m.

Bryan Parker, who was a Renegades season-ticket holder for their final season and has Redblacks season tickets in the first row of the south-side upper deck, said his plan is to head down early and meet old friends at Lansdowne.

His former hangout spot before the game — in the parking lot in the shadow of the south-side stands — is no longer available. With the rest of Lansdowne (the urban park and the retail area) not yet open, he said it might take a few games to find a new spot.

“Until the whole place is ready, you really don’t know what the routine is going to be like,” said Parker, who was sporting a customized #90 Redblacks jersey with his last name on the back.

However, the point of the experience isn’t so much the activities, but the people you meet, Parker said. “A lot of the guys that we know now we’ve got really strong friendships built from meeting guys before the games,” he said.
