Ottawa - Mayor Jim Watson today joined Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee, Rideau-Vanier Councillor Mathieu Fleury and many enthusiastic community members to officially open the redeveloped Jules Morin Park.
“Jules Morin Park, with its many new features, provides a whole new range of recreation programming for the entire community,” said Mayor Watson. “We now have a beautifully renovated park that will improve the quality of life for families and residents of all ages in Lowertown.”
In addition to the newly constructed Jules Morin Park Fieldhouse, which opened in February of this year, and the outdoor ice rink donated by the Ottawa Senators, the revitalization of the park includes several new facilities that will expand recreational opportunities for individuals and families in Rideau-Vanier Ward.
“This park has already become a destination and meeting place for residents of Rideau-Vanier,” said Chair Taylor. Jules Morin Park has something for everyone and supports the City’s commitment to creating active, healthy and caring communities.”
Residents can now enjoy a wading pool, a mini soccer field, a playground area for toddlers, school-age children and teens, as well as a picnic area. Other enhancements include a paved pathway with lighting, park seating and more trees. The parking lot will also be resurfaced within the next few weeks.
“Jules Morin Park is a great example of the City and the community working together,” stated Councillor Fleury. “The redevelopment committee worked closely with residents including conducting a community survey and extensive door-to-door canvassing to identify what amenities they would like to see within the park.”
The redevelopment committee was comprised of residents representing the Lowertown Community Association, The Lowertown Community Resource Centre, The Lowertown Historical Society, Le Patro d’Ottawa, Ottawa Community Housing and the Ottawa Police Service.
Jules Morin Park is located at 400 Clarence Street.
