As the clock approached midnight Tuesday, Rosemary Thompson was hoping for a miracle.
Thompson, one of a handful of volunteers, is trying to help secure enough votes online to help the Miracle League of Ottawa, one of 10 finalists in the Kraft Celebration Tour, win the contest’s $100,000 grand prize .
The money would go to building a baseball diamond and playground better accessible to handicapped children at the Notre-Dame-des-Champs Park near Navan and Mer Bleue Road in Orléans — one of the first in the capital region.
Voting is now closed and the top prize winner will be announced on Aug. 25.
Whatever the voting outcome, the Miracle League of Ottawa will still come out with $25,000, which is given to all finalists.
Thompson said the online voting can be tedious, so she decided to host a small “voting party” at her home in Alta Vista, where a team of people worked to solicit and submit votes for the project.
“It’s been joyful, it’s a party with a purpose,” said Thompson , adding that reinforcements shuffled into the house throughout the day, her husband was cooking food and “it’s been crazy, but it’s been fun.”
“The thing about this project is it comes from the heart of an 11-year-old boy, so I think that’s driving us more than anything else,” she said.
Thompson said their team learned how fly through the “captchas,” with the help of a young engineer, so they could vote quicker. They determined that a person with nimble fingers could vote roughly 50 times in 10 minutes.
But amassing the votes they needed meant the team has “tried very, very hard to reach out to as many people that we know” by creating a huge email list and sending reminders to their supporters.
“We have to be cognizant that small towns have an incredible ability of banding together and we cannot discount that,” Thompson said.
“No matter what happens, we’ve all pulled out all the stops so we feel good about what we’re doing” she said. “Win or lose, we’re determined.”
