Ottawa police say the nation’s capital is one of the safest cities in Canada, with a crime rate that decreased slightly last year, according to the force’s annual report released Thursday.

The report, to be presented Monday to the Police Services Board, said the city’s crime rate fell 11 per cent in 2013, compared with the year before.

The report also showed a 10 per cent increase in violent crime, but police said that was due to a change in how partner assault detectives clear their cases. The number of assaults fell by six per cent last year.

Police said the largest decrease in crime in 2013 was break and enters, which fell by 20 per cent to 2,210.

Ottawa police also released statistics for each ward, showing varying levels of crime in different areas of the city.
