The National Research Council has launched a massive, year-long security overhaul of its computer systems following a confirmed series of cyber attacks believed to come from China.
The NRC says that the Communications Security Establishment “detected and confirmed a cyber intrusion on the IT infrastructure of the National Research Council of Canada.
“Following assessments by NRC and its security partners, action has been taken to contain and address this security breach, including protecting its information holdings and notifying the Privacy Commissioner. NRC has also taken steps to inform its clients and stakeholders about this situation.”
Now it says it will undertake a major rebuilding of its computer security.
It estimates that “this could take approximately one year.”
Attempts to contact NRC for further information were not successful Tuesday.
A woman who identified herself as a media relations officer said there would be no one available to answer any questions, including senior management.
Several years ago the NRC’s official time signal had problems from a computer in China that started requesting an updated time signal multiple times per second.
It eventually stopped and an NRC official told the Citizen the incident was probably just a glitch in the Chinese computer.
