The Canadian War Museum’s Operation Veteran program, which provides meals to veterans, received a $35,000 donation Tuesday from four Montreal-area schools.

Students of Loyola High School, Sacred Heart School of Montreal, Queen of Angels Academy and Villa Maria raised the money during a walkathon held in May, which was organized in honour of the First World War’s centenary.

The $35,000 donation means that the program “will be able to serve almost 3,200 complimentary meals to Canadian veterans,” Operation Veteran founder Paul Kavanagh said in a statement.

“I am deeply touched by the generosity and extraordinary spirit of these teenagers, and I want to thank them all for working together in support of Canadian veterans,” he added.

Kavanagh founded Operation Veteran in 2009 after meeting a veteran who couldn’t afford to buy coffee and soup in the museum’s cafeteria. Since then the program has offered more than 5,000 meals to veterans.
