A motion aiming to delay construction on a Mississippi River power plant in Almonte passed its first stage Tuesday night.

Mississippi Mills town council’s committee of the whole met to discuss a bylaw that would limit changes in Almonte’s heritage district, affecting the Enerdu hydro expansion project.

The motion accepted by the committee, which will be brought before the town council, would limit construction for up to a year.

Accompanied by Ottawa’s infamous Raging Grannies singing group, protesters reportedly rolled a giant beach ball down the streets of Almonte Tuesday evening changing “save our river.” More than 4,200 people have signed a petition to halt the project.

A similar protest last month saw hundreds of people dropping beach balls into the river — and promptly collecting them again — to symbolize politicians’ “dropping the ball” on the issue, according to an article released by a citizens’ coalition to save the Mississippi River and Almonte’s historic district.

The $6-million dam expansion would “impose an unsightly and unwelcome cement structure” on the town, and the power generated would likely be sold to Ontario instead of benefiting the immediate area, according to the coalition.
