A 42-year-old Ottawa man faces 181 charges of cyber bullying and harassment of almost 40 people, following an eight-month investigation that spanned three countries.
Robert Campbell is expected to appear in court Friday.
He is accused of harassing 38 people in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, 18 of whom are from Ottawa.
Ottawa Police Service picked Campbell up from a home in Ottawa’s west end on Thursday.
Campbell is charged with 27 counts of criminal harassment, 69 counts of identity fraud and 85 counts of defamation libel.
The suspect was using internet anonymity software, but police say investigators used techniques that led to identification. Dubbed “Project Winter” the investigation was a combined effort between Ottawa and the RCMP.
“Cyber bullying and harassing people over the internet is a serious offence,” said Insp. Carl Cartright of the Ottawa Police Service. “Individuals who engage in this behaviour will be charged criminally by police. We urge victims to come forward and report this crime.”
The investigation involved assistance from police in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, London and England and Michigan.
