Activities throughout Ottawa will recognize Archaeology Month in August

Ottawa –If you’re interested in archaeology, then Ottawa is the place to be during Archaeology Month, which takes place August 1 to 31. The City of Ottawa is hosting fun activities for enthusiasts of all ages at City Hall, Billings Estate National Historic Site and Pinhey’s Point Historic Site.

  • Archaeology Exhibition – City Hall
    August 5 to September 2, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Produced by the City in partnership with the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation (Omamawininni Pimadjwowin – The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre) and the Cultural Education Centre at Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation. The exhibit presents pre-contact and historical archaeology related to Ottawa and surrounding areas.
  • Can You Dig It? - Billings Estate National Historic Site
    Wednesdays in August from 1 to 3 p.m.
    Unearth Ottawa’s best kept secrets by digging into an outdoor, hands-on archaeology program. Topics range from how to set up a digging grid, to artifact dating techniques, to making a time capsule.
  • Explorers’ Club – Pinhey’s Point Historic Site
    Saturdays in August from 10 a.m. to noon
    Families can spend time together learning about the history, natural heritage, and eco-systems of the site with different activities each week as they explore for insects and wildlife, keep their eyes open for geology, and uncover new archaeological secrets.

  • Colonel By Day – Rideau Canal between Parliament Hill and the Château Laurier – Monday, August 4 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Archaeological Tour of Parliament Hill – Sunday, August 10 from 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Unearthing the Diefenbunker – August 1 to 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Kitigan Zibi Anishinbeg Cultural Centre (exhibit), Maniwaki, Quebec – August 1 to 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • The Algonquin Way Cultural Centre (exhibit), Pikwàkanagàn, Ontario– August 1 to 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
