The husband of Jagtar Gill, who along with a female co-worker is charged with first-degree murder in her slaying, will have bail hearings.

OC Transpo bus drivers Bhupinderpal Gill and Gurpreet Ronald appeared separately by video in an Ottawa courtroom on Tuesday.

Ronald, who appeared first wearing a green sweater, will have a five-day bail hearing beginning Aug. 26. A weeklong bail hearing for Gill, who appeared later wearing an orange jailhouse coverall, isn’t scheduled to begin until Oct. 6.

Gurpreet Ronald is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jagtar Gill.

The pair is currently expected to have a preliminary hearing next July, although that date might be moved up depending on the availability of the lawyers.

Family members of Jagtar Gill were in the courtroom.

Jagtar Gill, 43, was at home recovering from surgery on Jan. 29 when, police say, she was first bludgeoned, then had her wrists and throat slit.

Bhupinderpal and the couple’s oldest daughter, who was staying home from high school to tend to her mother, were out of the home buying a cake and flowers to mark the couple’s anniversary. When they returned to the home, they found Jagtar dead in the living room.

Police had said in the early days of the investigation that Bhupinderpal Gill, 38, had an alibi and was not considered a suspect.

With news of Ronald’s arrest on April 8, investigators said that what was initially treated as a random killing quickly appeared to be targeted.

Days before she was arrested, Ronald, 34, who lived with her husband and two children a few doors away from the Gills’ Barrhaven home, found a note with the word “Killer” pinned to her personal vehicle outside an OC Transpo garage. Theories about who was involved and why have been circling in their Barrhaven neighbourhood, the Sikh community and among fellow transit drivers.

Family members said that the Gill children — ages 15, 10 and eight — are being cared for by their grandparents.
