Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson joined city councillors and other dignitaries for the official unveiling of the date stones at the Minto Recreation Complex as the new $54-million facility nears completion.

“This is an important complex for residents of Barrhaven and the surrounding area and it is a pleasure to mark this milestone in construction as the facility nears completion,” said Mayor Watson. “These date stones are a wonderful and historic addition to the site because they are from locally sourced Nepean sandstone that was preserved from the West Block of Parliament Hill.”

The Minto Recreation Complex-Barrhaven is scheduled to open in November 2014 with winter recreation programming set to begin in early 2015. The complex features many new amenities including a six-lane, 25-metre pool, two regulation NHL-sized arenas with seating, a gymnasium with a second storey walking track, a fitness centre, seven multi-purpose rooms and a premium CFL/FIFA dimension artificial turf outdoor sports field.

“We are thrilled with the progress on the Minto Recreation Complex and eagerly await the grand opening,” said Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the City’s Community and Protective Services Committee. “The use of sandstone from the West Block that was quarried in Nepean, is a unique way to pay tribute to the local community.”

“The complex is a welcome addition for residents and families in one of the city’s fastest growing communities in the city,” said Councillor Harder. “I am very pleased with the progress we are making and, as with many residents in the area, I am anxiously awaiting the grand opening in a few short months.”

An historic piece of Nepean Sandstone, part of the original construction of Parliament Hill’s West Block in 1878, was used to create a date stone for the recreation complex. This salvaged piece of restored masonry material was graciously provided by the department of Public Works and Government Services Canada. It became available recently when it was removed from Mackenzie Tower and replaced with new stone.
