Visitors to Ottawa will soon be greeted by new signs highlighting the nation’s capital as a cycling and pedestrian-friendly city.

Last year, Ottawa became the province’s first city to receive a gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community Award from the Share the Road Cycling Coalition. The city was also given a silver-level designation as a walk-friendly city by WALK Friendly Ontario.

“When we’re given an honour like this by outside objective organizations, we should boast about it,” Mayor Jim Watson said after unveiling the sign at City Hall Friday morning.

The new signs, which will be placed at entry points along the city limits, will also be emblazoned with the city’s population and website.

Watson said he thinks highlighting cycling and pedestrian-friendly help will help bolster tourism in the city, already its third-largest industry.

“Cycling is becoming big tourism business,” he said, adding that Canada has an aging demographic and seniors like to walk.

“Seniors want to go to an environment that is safe, because they’ll often do a lot of walking, particularly in the downtown core.”

During this term of council, more than $28 million has been invested in cycling infrastructure. Multi-use pathways and bike paths now cover 700 kilometres city-wide.

Planning committee chair Coun. Peter Hume and deputy transportation committee chair Coun. Allan Hubley, who is a frequent skeptic of cycling lanes on city roads, joined Watson to unveil the new sign.
