Ottawa – Starting Monday, August 11, the multi-use pathway along the west bank of the Rideau River will be closed in the vicinity of Hurdman Bridge due to construction on Highway 417. The pathway will remain closed for 4 to 6 weeks. A signed detour route will be in place.
The pathway along the east bank is also scheduled to close for a 4-6 week period beginning in September to facilitate this work on Highway 417 but its closure will not occur until the pathway on the west bank is reopened.
This closure is part of the Highway 417 Expansion project, which began in May 2013. This project will add an additional lane in each direction, between Nicholas Street and the Split. The additional lane will be used for bus rapid transit during the 2015 to 2018 phase of the Confederation Line construction.
With all of the construction-related activities underway, residents are encouraged to be flexible with commuting times, stagger work hours or use other alternative means for travel. The public is asked to consider options such as transit, walking, cycling or carpooling.
The City of Ottawa has tools on ottawa.ca to help motorists and transit users plan their routes and manage their commute including:
• OttawaNav – the City’s mobile application for real time construction and traffic information.Travel Planner at octranspo.com – transit users can chart and plan routes
• City of Ottawa Traffic Report – outlining citywide road closures, traffic restrictions and detours
• Interactive traffic map – showing construction areas and live traffic cams throughout the city
• Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) cameras along Highway 417
• Cycling maps and information – detailing bicycle pathways and lanes throughout the city
Information about additional construction activity will be shared with the public prior to work commencing.
