A plane holding 72 passengers and four crew members was evacuated Monday morning at Ottawa Airport after reports of smoke.

The Canadian North Inc. plane was on a regularly scheduled flight from Ottawa to Iqaluit, but it wasn’t yet on the runway, said spokesman Graeme Burns.

Burns said the company was still speaking with flight crew and operators to determine the cause. He said the flight was sidelined “as a result of an indicator, they decided to they needed to take immediate action and get those people off the plane.”

Ottawa Paramedic Service said there were no reports of injuries and paramedics were still assessing the passengers an hour after the incident was called in at 10:26 a.m.

“It was on the tarmac when we responded,” said Ottawa Paramedic Headquarter Superintendent Keith Buchanan.

Reports suggested there was no obvious sign of smoke, Buchanan said, but “there was certainly some sort of burning odour.”
