Ottawa – Starting Saturday, August 16, lane reductions will begin on the 174 reducing westbound traffic to one lane west of Blair Road to the Highway 417/174 split. The lane reductions will be in place until late August. These lane reductions are required as part of the Highway 417 Expansion Project.

Significant traffic delays are expected in this area as a result of the work, and motorists are advised to explore alternative routes around the work zone.

Residents are encouraged to take transit as the work on Highway 174 will have no impact on transit service. OC Transpo has available capacity and will make adjustments to service in order to provide additional capacity where possible if required.

The City of Ottawa encourages commuters to be flexible with commute times, stagger work hours or use other alternative means for travel. The public can choose to walk, cycle or carpool within the city. The City of Ottawa has tools on ottawa.ca to help motorists and transit users plan their routes and manage their commute including:

  • Ottawa Nav travel app which provides real-time updates for commuters travelling by car, bike or by foot;
  • Travel Planner at octranspo.com – transit users can chart and plan routes;
  • City of Ottawa Traffic Report – outlining citywide road closures, traffic restrictions and detours;
  • Interactive traffic map – showing construction areas and live traffic cams throughout the city;
  • Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) cameras along Highway 417; and,
  • Cycling maps and information – detailing bicycle pathways and lanes throughout the city.

Information about additional construction activity will be shared with the public prior to work commencing. Further project details and other ongoing City roadwork is available on ottawa.ca.
