Capital region drivers may be seeing red, and hopefully stopping for it from now on, after a July blitz on traffic safety on both sides of the Ottawa River.

In all, almost 400 tickets were handed out to Ottawa and Gatineau drivers who ran red lights.

The police forces on both sides of the river bumped up their efforts last month to address road infractions at street lights.

They were also on the lookout for cycling safety, handing out more than 100 charges on that front, for a total of 503 charges on both safety issues.

The number of tickets was near equal on both sides of the border, with 253 in Ottawa and 250 in Gatineau.

Gatineau were a bit more casual about stoplights, clocking 199 charges for running a red, compared to 187 in Ottawa.

Ottawa fared slightly worse for cycling safety, with 66 infractions compared to 51 in Gatineau.

The numbers are counted as a success of the “Selective Traffic Enforcement Program” (or STEP).

It’s a partnership with various groups in the capital, including the paramedics, Ottawa Public Health and the city to decrease the number of road deaths and serious injuries through “through culture change, community engagement, and development of a sustainable safe transportation environment.”
