The Thursday afternoon commute in the capital is expected to be a mess as protesters take to the streets and bridges.

Ottawa Police Service say the marches will mean rolling road closures for the Portage Bridge, Alexandra Bridge and Chaudière Bridge, which will all be closed for short periods of time during the afternoon.

The closures are for a multi-prong “unity march” to mark the first day of the Peoples’ Social Forum, a four-day gathering of activists centred at the University of Ottawa.

The first march is planned for 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., starting at Gatineau’s Jacques-Cartier Park. They will be joined by a group from Victoria Island to cross Portage Bridge.

The Alexandra Bridge is expected to be closed both direction starting at around 2:25 p.m. for people moving westbound from the park on Laurier Street in Gatineau.

More are expected to join from the War Museum, closing the intersection at Booth and Wellington streets at about 2:40 p.m.

Chaudière Bridge will be closed both directions while this group moves eastbound on Wellington Street.

Wellington Street, too, will have rolling road closures both directions, starting at 3 p.m. Police say this march is expected to take an hour.
