An application for two 27-storey condominium towers in Centretown won’t be discussed at Thursday’s planning committee because the developer has requested that it be deferred.

The proposal by developer Mastercraft Starwood for 267 O’Connor St. was to be discussed at Thursday’s meeting. City planners say the application should be refused because the development wouldn’t qualify as a landmark.

But the developer asked that the discussion be deferred because a policy within the Centretown Secondary Plan which allows for building as high as 27 storeys on major streets if the development qualifies as a landmark is being appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board.

Current zoning rules only allow buildings of up to nine storeys on the site.

The OMB hearing is taking place over three weeks starting Sept. 15. A letter from a lawyer for the developer said it would be premature to consider the application to rezone 267 O’Connor St. before the OMB’s decision.

The application may need to be amended and “at this late stage, there is no merit in considering the Application to Rezone until there is certainty in what policies will be in effect,” the letter said.

Planning committee chair Coun. Peter Hume said city staff have reviewed the deferral request and have no concerns. He expects committee will grant the request.

It’s possible committee could decide to consider the application anyway, but that’s a “very remote” possibility, he said.
