Darius Mirshahi, 29, moved to Ottawa from Toronto for the forum

Full-time organizer of Peoples Social Forum, “problem solver,” married to Sakura Saunders

“There’s so much excitement around this because people know that they need the support of other movements. There are so many connections and if we stay in our silos, we’ll never get anywhere … Occupy, Idle No More, Quebec student strikes: These are mass movements popping up every year. I think we’re at a low point, but we’re headed into the next big wave and this forum will really kick things off.”

“So much of it is building in the process. It’s not just about what’s going to happen this weekend but working on a common goal with people that you might not normally work with. It’s really easy from afar to criticize other people but when you have a same goal and you’re working together you notice it’s a lot easier to work together than you’d imagined.”

Mike Palecek

Mike Palecek, 32, Ottawa

Canadian Union of Postal Workers, labour rights activist

“There are a lot of places where these things tie together that we don’t even realize. Part of getting people together is to help make those connections, help build solidarity between organizations. … It’s a pretty mammoth undertaking to bring together thousands of people. It’s going to be the largest gathering of social movements and progressive organizations in the history of the country.”

Rachelle Sauvé

Rachelle Sauvé, 35, Peterborough.

Unemployed, full-time community organizer, policing, prisons and food justice activist

“I’m really excited for the opportunity for people who do the day-to-day living of struggle or do the day-to-day work from all over the country to actually get to be in the same place. That is how you get those pieces mixed together and moving. There’s so many workshops, so many levels of learning that people can bounce in on. If someone’s really new to all these ideas, there’s space for them.”

Nicole Maylor

“The forum encompasses ideas from all ages. We also have a children’s forum where kids can come together and discuss amongst themselves things that are happening at their age. … Everyone’s idea is important and can help to be a catalyst for change.”

Wesley Petite

Wesley Petite, 27, Ottawa

Political economy student, education activist

“We’re having discussions which help people realize the links between these multiple struggles. They intersect in many ways. So, getting on the same page about how we can work together and envision where this movement is going, and foster a more collaborative spirit. It’s a cultural shift from what we have right now, where people are working in individual groups.”
