A Gatineau man faces a number of charges after a long chase Wednesday during which a car was clocked at 173 kilometres per hour on the highway.

Police say the incident began when a late-model Acura was clocked travelling at 86 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on residential Georges Street in the Masson-Angers district. The car was being driven in a “very aggressive” fashion despite other traffic, according to the report.

Police followed the Acura to the westbound Autoroute 50, where the driver stepped on the gas and was timed at 173 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

Sgt. Jean-Paul Lemay said the chase continued for some distance, and police had the sirens and lights activated.

“But sirens aren’t really audible from behind a driver at those speeds,” Lemay said.

The driver finally spotted the police car on his tail at Rue Des Laurentides.

When police went to question the 42-year-old driver, they found the female owner of the car in the passenger seat and a three-year-old child in a car seat “unsuitable” for a child of that age.

The driver faces five charges — including endangering the life of a motorist stalled on the side of the highway — and had his licence suspended on the spot for at least seven days.
