Members of the public have a brief opportunity Thursday to view and comment on the six final design concepts for the planned National Memorial to Victims of Communism.

But if you’re interested, you’d better hustle.

The public viewing will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the fifth floor of the National Capital Commission headquarters at 40 Elgin St.

The federal government says public comments will be shared with the jury before it recommends which design the government should choose for the $4-million memorial.

Taxpayers are footing up to $1.5 million of the cost, with Tribute to Liberty, the charity that proposed the memorial in 2009, raising the rest.

The new memorial, to be unveiled a year from now, will occupy a prominent site on Wellington Street between the Supreme Court of Canada and Library and Public Archives Canada.

The government says the memorial will recognize Canada’s role in offering refuge to millions who fled communist regimes. More than eight million Canadians trace their roots to countries that lived or still live under communism, it says.

The memorial will also raise awareness of the “ravages of communist regimes and remind all of the core Canadian values that unite us,” the government said in a news release this week.
