A preliminary hearing has been set for the fall for the Ottawa man accused of killing two sex trade workers and a violent sexual assault in the city’s west end.
Marc Leduc, 57, was charged with first-degree murder in the 2011 slaying Leeanne Lawson and the 2008 killing of Pamela Kosmack.
When Leduc was arrested for the homicides in February 2013, he was already in custody at the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre awaiting trial after he was charged in a violent sexual assault on Nov. 2, 2012.
A 19-year-old woman taking a nap in her Elmira Drive apartment awoke to find a knife-wielding man standing over her bed. She managed to turn the knife on her attacker before escaping and running to a neighbour’s house for help.
Leduc was charged with sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, overcome resistance to offence/attempt to choke, break and enter, uttering threats to cause bodily harm, assault with a weapon, assault and breach of probation.
DNA found during the Kosmack and Lawson homicide investigations matched that recovered during the investigation into the November sexual assault.
Crown prosecutors will call witnesses and other evidence during the preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 8 to Oct. 3 in an attempt to show there is enough evidence for a judge to send the matter to trial.
The defence will also have the opportunity to test the Crown’s case and make arguments about why the accused shouldn’t be committed to trial.
