Ottawa – This is the final week of the regularly scheduled summer activities at City Hall. It features two special events – an outdoor film night and a unique community engagement experience.
Cinema Under the Stars – Tuesday, August 26, 8 p.m. (Marion Dewar Plaza)
The Canadian Film Institute (CFI), the Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa (IFCO) and the Ottawa International Film Festival (OIFF) are presenting the best short films from across Canada, Ontario and the local area under the stars at Marion Dewar Plaza. CFI will present short Canadian animation features and a rarely screened silent film from 1919, Back to God’s Country.
IFCO will screen three short films from three talented Ottawa filmmakers: Sara Tedford (Stitch), Sasha Vreca (Boy Scout Dream), and Carmelo Zucco (Dream Sequence). OIFF will present two films – Encore and the Proposal.
This event is free. Please bring a lawn chair and non-perishable food donation to the Ottawa Food Bank.
SOUP Ottawa: Thursday, August 28, 6:30 p.m.
Ten dollars, creative pitch people, and an enthusiastic and engaged audience are the key ingredients in the recipe for a successful SOUP Ottawa – a unique community engagement event that is being held inside City Hall in Jean Pigott Place on Thursday, August 28 at 6:30 p.m.
SOUP Ottawa is looking for enthusiastic audience members to enjoy a delicious bowl of soup, while acting as the jury to hear six creative pitches. Six pitch people have already been selected from a list of applicants.
SOUP Ottawa is a micro-grant, non-profit organization that operates a unique way to get the public involved in their community. Their method operates around the premise of interested pitch people and audiences paying $10 to solve or address community related issues and themes. At the end of the evening, each audience will vote for the best pitch, and that individual will win the proceeds collected that night.
The event has previously been held in various locations around the city, with each discussion covering a different theme. The City Hall event will be choosing the best pitch that completes the sentence, “Make Ottawa Blank.”
To register to be an audience to judge and enjoy a bowl of soup, visit soupottawa.ca.
