The city is warning commuters to prepare for a busy fall construction season, and advising people to plan their routes and consider alternate transportation.

Chief among the upcoming projects are two overpass replacements that will require Hwy. 417 to be closed, city staff said a technical briefing on Friday.

The Lees Avenue overpass will be reinstated the weekend of Sept. 6; requiring full closure of Highway 417 between 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6 and 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7.

On the weekend of Oct. 4, the Riverside-Vanier Parkway overpass will be replaced, also requiring full Highway 417 closure.

The Vanier Parkway will be down to one lane in each direction for two weeks prior to the replacement and one week afterward. City staff are encouraging north-south commuters to choose alternate routes for that time period.

Those projects are part of a heavy fall of construction on the heels of a busy summer. Kelly Martin, from the city’s infrastructure services department, said the city anticipates completing 35 projects and about 70 road resurfacings by the end of this month. They are starting 30 new construction projects and 24 new resurfacings in the fall.

Commuters from the east end can expect noticeable delays at Rideau River crossings near the downtown core such as Sussex Drive, St. Patrick Street and Rideau Street, due to continued construction, said Phil Landry, the city’s manager of traffic services.

OC Transpo is allocating additional capacity to their routes from the east end because of the higher construction impact there.

On the LRT front, the construction of Hurdman Station beings this fall. Albert Street construction continues, and Preston Street will start this fall as well. Work continues on the connector tracks at Tremblay and Belfast Road.

At the future Lyon and Parliament LRT stations, there will be some utility relocation work requires. There will be an impact on a block-by-block basis, similar to the water main replacement that happened on Queen Street last year.

The city has a number of suggestions for commuters, such as staggering work hours to avoid peak periods and using its website, Ottawa Nav app and traffic Twitter account to plan the best route.
