Ottawa – The multi-use pathway and a new fenced, leash-free dog area in Hampton Park are now officially open.

The new multi-use pathway not only provides a safe and convenient connection between Kirkwood Avenue and Island Park Drive for pedestrians and cyclists, it also opens up a new four-kilometre cycling route to Carling Avenue, stretching from Woodroffe Avenue to Island Park Drive.

In addition to the pathway, improvements were made to connecting streets to further enhance the safety and convenience to cyclists. These improvements include:

  • Permitting cyclists to travel westbound on Dovercourt at Kirkwood, (previously prohibited).
  • A new westbound bike lane on Sebring from the Hampton Park entrance to Kirkwood Avenue.
  • A painted bicycle pocket now provides a safe waiting area for westbound cyclists crossing at the Kirkwood and Dovercourt intersection.
  • The Island Park Drive and Merivale Road intersection has incorporated bike-specific improvement to safely connect the new route from the existing Island Park Drive bike lanes.
  • New sharrows and bike route signage has been installed to improve on-road safety – guiding cyclists and alerting motorists of the new cycling route.

Hampton Park also features a new amenity for local pet parents. A fence-controlled dog run area gives these best friends a chance to be unleashed for a bit of a run and freedom.

The National Capital Commission provided their permission to use a 9,000-sq-metre area on their property for the dog run. The area is fenced in and has five single pedestrian gates and one-double gate for maintenance access.
