The community group raising money for renovations at the Constance Bay Community Centre should be permitted to sell naming rights and the city should chip in another $200,000, the city’s community and protective services committee voted Tuesday.

The Constance and Buckham’s Bay Community Association has been working to to expand the community centre, which it operates, for nearly three years. As well as renovations, a 5,500-square-foot addition would allow a larger library, four multi-purpose rooms, a group kitchen, fitness centre, club and arts room, café and patio.

The project is about $400,000 shy of the $1.725-million budget.

The city has agreed to match the community’s share of the project, up to $750,000, but expected to be $400,000. Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, who said there aren’t a lot of development charges in the area that can be applied to the project, has used his office’s cash-in-lieu of parkland funding contribution for the community centre.

Naming rights could make $100,000, which would be among the contributions the city would match. Council will have the final say on both the naming rights and the city contributing an extra $200,000.
