Ottawa Two Ottawa underpasses are now sporting bright, new murals as part of the City’s streetscape initiative first announced by Mayor Jim Watson in his 2014 State of the City Address.

Local artists were chosen through a Request for Qualifications selection process to paint murals on Metcalfe Street, where it passes under the Queensway, and Riverside Drive where it passes under Bronson Avenue.

The two locations were selected with the cooperation of Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation and the National Capital Commission.

“These murals were made possible by great cooperation between very talented local artists and three levels of government,” said Mayor Watson. “They bring beauty and vitality to Ottawa neighbourhoods while reflecting the unique aspects of the local community.”

One wall of each underpass features a mural painted by local artist Nicole Belanger, celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation in 2017. The opposing wall of each underpass includes a community-inspired mural, with images of local culture and wildlife that are important to the people who live and work in these areas, while also showcasing the creative expression of the artists.

The mural located at Metcalfe Street was created by Ottawa Urban Arts, a group of artists that empower youth in our community and provide spaces for their voice to be heard in positive and creative ways. The artist team included Cassandra Dickie, Mike Davis, Dominic Laporte and Phil Laporte.

The mural theme is “Connection”, which is represented using puzzle piece shapes connecting and breaking apart throughout the length of the wall, with images reflective of residents, community groups and of local architecture.

Christopher Griffin was the successful artist selected to paint the Riverside location. His mural is a depiction of the Peregrine Falcon which nests in the area. In 2012, the Ottawa Field Naturalists began monitoring the site near Heron Road and Bronson Avenue where a pair of falcons has nested since at least 2011.

“Outdoor murals have proven to be effective in managing graffiti vandalism”, said Councillor Keith Egli, Chair of the City’s Transportation Committee. “They also add character and a sense of community pride to our neighbourhoods while supporting our local artists.”

“The streetscape initiative is a great way to enhance the key gateways to our city, and contribute to the local economy,” stated Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee. “As residents pass by the murals, we hope it encourages them to invite their friends and family to visit Ottawa in 2017 to enjoy our many festivals and attractions.”
