Opera Lyra has found a replacement to sing the part of The Sacristan in its production of Tosca. The hiring was made necessary following the abrupt dismissal of American singer Valerian Ruminski after he made comments on social media mocking a passenger on public transit during Capital Pride festivities on the weekend.
Ruminski posted a picture of a man with jewel-encrusted fingernails and made fun of his appearance. Ruminski, who had been playing the role of The Sacristan for Opera Lyra, said the man was “parading his choices,” had “deficiencies” and “ego issues.”
In a statement, the company’s general manager Jeep Jeffries said:
“Opera Lyra is a community-based organization that is proud of its relationships with the huge diversity of people living in the National Capital Region. Persons employed by Opera Lyra, including short-term cast members, are expected to contribute to good community relations. Respectful behaviour towards others is an essential part of this.
“Valerian Ruminski has recently expressed some personal views on Facebook. These became a public issue as soon as he chose to post them. His follow-up comments are also on the public record. Opera Lyra dissociates itself entirely from Mr. Ruminski’s publicly stated views. We are relieving him of his duties.
“The Tosca production will take place, as scheduled, opening on Sept. 6. The musical performers and the directoral staff are enthusiastic. Ticket sales are solid. We invite the Ottawa-Gatineau public to continue their great support.”
In an interview Tuesday morning, Jeffries announced that the company has signed Canadian bass Peter Strummer to fill the role vacated by Ruminski. The part is a relatively small one and rehearsals can continue until Strummer arrives in Ottawa this weekend, Jeffries says.
Ruminski is a graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and of SUNY-Buffalo and has performed with many opera companies, including The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Dallas Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Seattle Opera, Miami Opera, Minnesota Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Opera Ireland, Opera de Montreal, Opera de Monte Carlo, Birmingham Opera and Festival de Belle-ile en Mer.
According to his biography, he has won several awards over his career, including the Lincoln Center Martin Segal Award.
Ruminksi, who is American, has upcoming roles in Fidelio and Turandot with the Manitoba Opera, in Shot! at the Nickel City Opera and in Otello with Opera de Montreal. He has appeared with Opera Lyra in past productions.
In a statement on his Facebook page Ruminski offered an apology:
“My statement was hurtful and I have realized that what I have said was cruel and not in keeping with the way I generally feel about people and have interacted with people in the past. It was an unfortunate spur of the moment thoughtless comment that I need not have said and should not have said. I apologize and regret any harm this has caused to any and all parties affected by my comments.”
