Ottawa – The City of Ottawa is improving its cycling network with the opening of the new eastbound Laurier Avenue cycle track on the south side of Laurier Avenue. The track runs between Elgin Street and Queen Elizabeth Driveway.

The Laurier Avenue cycle track, coupled with a new painted cycling lane at the Laurier Avenue eastbound exit to Queen Elizabeth Driveway, and a new designated westbound bike lane on the north side of Laurier Avenue, will provide a better cycling link between downtown and communities on either side of the Rideau Canal.

The sidewalk that ran along Laurier Avenue at the Ottawa Courthouse has now been converted to a section of the cycle track. Signage is in place to direct pedestrians to the existing sidewalk, directly beside the Courthouse.

The new Laurier Avenue cycle track is part of the east-west bikeway expansion between Elgin Street and Cumberland Avenue, and is an Ottawa on the Move project. Ottawa on the Move is about keeping our community and economy moving forward through strategic investments in a number of transportation, water and sewer projects to build a better City and create jobs.

Ottawa was the first city in Ontario to receive the gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community Award by the Share the Road Cycling Coalition, thanks to bicycle-friendly policies and initiatives like the Laurier Avenue cycle track.

BACKGROUND:

Cycle tracks:

Cycle tracks are innovative, paved asphalt bike lanes that run between the sidewalk and the road. They are predominantly one-way and follow the direction of traffic. These cycling-only lanes are a new design feature on Ottawa roads. They are built at the same level as sidewalks and are separated from motor-vehicle traffic by a curb.

Information for cyclists:

Cyclists are reminded to never travel the wrong way down a one-way cycle track and to watch for pedestrians who may step into the lane to cross the street. Cyclists must obey all traffic signals and road markings, as a bicycle is considered a vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act.

Cyclists are also reminded to always enter an intersection cautiously along the marked cross ride and to watch for turning vehicles to ensure that they are yielding. It is important to be aware of other road users who may enter the cycle track, including vehicles entering or exiting driveways (drivers who are reversing out of a driveway may have limited sight distance); and pedestrians moving between the sidewalk and the road (to or from parked cars, boarding or exiting buses, or crossing the street).

Cyclists should travel at a reasonable speed that allows for sudden stops, if necessary, and must yield to pedestrians crossing the cycle track at marked crosswalks, bus stops, and at school drop-off / pick-up zones.

Information for drivers and pedestrians:

Drivers are reminded to be aware of cyclists and to check both ways before crossing identified (green) cycle tracks. Drivers need to be vigilant for cyclists and pedestrians who are crossing intersections and must yield to cyclists in the cycle track. Drivers need to be extra vigilant when entering and exiting driveways that cross cycle tracks and are reminded to obey all traffic signs and signals and travel at a reasonable speed that allows you to stop, if necessary.

Pedestrians must also watch for cyclists in both directions when crossing a cycle track, avoid loitering or queuing onto the cycle track, and always obey all traffic signs and signals.
