A McEwen Fuels tanker carrying furnace oil crashed down a slope at least 30 metres after going off the road on Highway 416 near the Queensway late Sunday afternoon.

While the driver appeared to have suffered only minor injuries, Ottawa fire crews at the scene of the 5 p.m. accident had to spread plastic tarps around the tanker in case it began leaking.

According to initial reports, the truck was heading north on Highway 416 when, at the curve at the Highway 417 exit, it crashed into a guide-rail and overturned before flipping on its side and sliding down the roadside slope. The driver reportedly sustained only a few scrapes.

A fuel oil tanker left the Hwy. 416 and rolled down an embankment onto the EB 417 off ramp below at Holly Acres Rd. in Ottawa, Saturday, August 30, 2014. Haxmat crews are on scene to contain a furnace oil spill.

Given the potential of a fuel spill, fire department officials called out a hazardous materials crew. However, by 6:30 p.m. firefighters had averted the threat of a serious spill and officials anticipated that, over the course of the evening, the furnace oil would be transferred to another truck and the tanker righted.
