Ottawa – The City of Ottawa is pleased to announce that local artist Chantal Gervais is the winner of the 2014 Karsh Award. Deputy City Manager, Steve Kanellakos, will present the award to Ms. Gervais at a ceremony at the Karsh-Masson Gallery on September 12.

“The Karsh brothers, while world renowned for their photography, made an enormous contribution to their adopted home town of Ottawa – leaving their mark and adding to our city’s rich cultural heritage," said Deputy City Manager, Steve Kanellakos. "This award seeks to help foster and reward the same artistic spirit displayed by the Karsh brothers among other local artists."

A jury of three arts professionals and peers selected Ms. Gervais for this award from an impressive list of nominated artists. The jury was comprised of Raymond Aubin, artist in contemporary photography, Rosalie Favell, former Karsh Award recipient, and Jonathan Shaughnessy, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Canada.

In their statement, the jury salutes the excellence of Chantal Gervais’s photographic work:

“She is a model of consistency, research and innovation. For two decades, she has focused on the frailty of the human body. Her esthetic choices have sublime aspects that arouse paradoxical feelings of attraction and repulsion in the viewer.”

Ms. Gervais’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions across Canada and abroad, but despite her personal success, she remains strongly committed to promoting her local arts community. She has been a board member at local artist-run centres, including Gallery 101 and Daïmôn, and teaches at the University of Ottawa and Ottawa School of Art.

“Ms. Gervais is doubly deserving of this award, as she not only continues to challenge us all through her own creative output, but also to share her experience and help foster new generations of artists through her work as an instructor," said the Chair of the Community and Protective Services Committee. "We’re proud that the Karsh Award is going to someone who shares the City’s commitment to fostering an environment in which artists of all disciplines are supported in the creation of their work.”

The Karsh-Masson Gallery will host the exhibition The Karsh Award 2014: Chantal Gervais, from September 12 to October 19. Ms. Gervais will speak about her work on Sunday, October 5 at 2 p.m. at the gallery. This free artist talk will be offered in English and is open to the public. Ms. Gervais will take questions in English or French.

Ottawa City Council established the Karsh Award in 2003 to honour the late photographers Yousuf and Malak Karsh. The award celebrates an enduring legacy of excellence in fine-art photography in Ottawa. The $7,500 prize is presented every two years to an Ottawa artist for outstanding work in a photo-based medium.
