Ottawa – White-tailed deer are the subject of the City of Ottawa’s third installment of its Wildlife Speakers Series, which will be held on Thursday, September 18 at 7 p.m. at Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepointe Drive.
Humans and deer share a long history of encounters. White-tailed deer are valued as game, and for their grace and beauty. However, they can be a pest to farmers and gardeners, and a safety concern for motorists – especially in the fall.
The City has invited two experts from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Michael Gatt and Dr. Brent Patterson, who will share their experience and knowledge to provide a better understanding of white-tailed deer.
Mr. Gatt, a senior wildlife biologist, has experience working with a variety of stakeholders in developing strategies to prevent and manage conflicts with deer and other wildlife. Dr. Patterson is a research scientist and adjunct professor with Trent University, and has been exploring the ecology of deer and their canine predators – coyotes and wolves.
In addition to the presentation, visitors can view a nature slideshow and explore an environmental exposition from 6 to 9 p.m., to get more information about Ottawa’s wildlife, natural environment and local environmental initiatives. Safer Roads Ottawa will be on-hand to discuss the vehicle-deer collision prevention campaign, Speeding Costs You Deerly, while Ottawa Public Health will have information on Lyme disease.
The City will be holding its fourth and final installment of its Wildlife Speakers Series before the end of the year. The series is intended to increase residents’ knowledge and appreciation of wildlife, as well as promote coexistence through understanding and respect.
