The former coach of the University of Ottawa hockey team who was dismissed in the wake of an allegation of sexual assault against members of his team has now been hired by a hockey team in France.

Réal Paiement will begin his two-year contract with the Ducs d’Angers at their game Tuesday, according to the team’s website.

Paiement replaces Simon Lacroix, who is suffering from health problems, the website says.

Paiement was fired from the University of Ottawa after a review found that he learned of the alleged incident within hours and took his own disciplinary action, but he didn’t inform university authorities.

The sexual assault is alleged to have happened in the early hours of Feb. 2, while the men’s hockey team was in Thunder Bay for two road games.

Captain David Foucher, 25, and assistant captain Guillaume Donovan, 24, both of Gatineau, are accused of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old Lakehead University student.
