Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau will be one of four of his force’s employees receiving the Order of Merit of the Police Forces from the Governor General Tuesday.

Bordeleau will be made an officer of the order, the highest honour, along with civilian employee director general Debra Frazer.

“I am both proud and humbled to have been nominated to receive this award,” Bordeleau said.

“I’ve served 30 years as a police officer in the community that I was born and raised. It’s an honour to serve as chief, and I enjoy leading a great team of women and men who serve for the same reason: to keep our community safe.

“My family, friends and my team have always ?been there to support me, and I thank them for that. To receive this award amongst colleagues and co-workers is also very humbling. They are deserving of this recognition.”

Civilian director Randy Mar and Staff Sgt. Lynne Turnbull will both be made members of the order.

In total, 77 employees of police services across the country will be given the order by Gov. Gen. David Johnston. The awards honour exceptional service displayed by members of the country’s police forces and recognizes commitment to Canada, and contributions to police and community development.

The order was created in 2000.

In order to be awarded the order, a member of a police service must first be nominated and have his or her name submitted to the commanding officer of that force, either a chief or a commissioner. The commanding officer then submits approved names to the commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Principal Commander of the Order, who then sends recommendations from an advisory committee to the Governor General.
