The family of a 10-year-old girl killed by a falling tree in La Pêche, Que., on Saturday says they simply don’t know what to do without her.

Taylor Kelly’s mother, Wendy Mason-Kelly, said in a brief statement Monday that her daughter was the eldest of four children. She said the little girl loved her family and friends, the outdoors, basketball, snowboarding and skateboarding.

“She was independent and full of life, she made us proud every day, ” Mason-Kelly wrote in a statement. “She was creative and unique, she was our first child and we don’t know what to do without her.”

Since Taylor’s death on Saturday, condolences have flooded the social media pages of her family members. A photo on Mason-Kelly’s Facebook page shows her daughter grinning and covered in bubbles during Foam Fest run at Edelweiss Ski Resort earlier this summer.

In comments under that photo, Taylor was described as an angel and a “beautiful girl full of spirit and joy” with a bright smile. Mason-Kelly also posted a comment under the photo of her oldest daughter.

“She was so strong, so beautiful, so smart and now we are so lost,” Mason-Kelly wrote.

Taylor’s family was at the scene of the accident Saturday, which happened just before 2 p.m. in Farrelton, a village in La Pêche about an hour north of Ottawa.

Police said Taylor was taken to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, where she was pronounced dead.

The mayor of La Pêche, Robert Bussière, called the incident a terrible tragedy. He said the accident apparently happened as the tree was being felled with a chainsaw.

Mason-Kelly said in the statement her family doesn’t want to talk about the details of what happened on Saturday.

Police said Monday the coroner’s office was investigating the girl’s death and an autopsy was scheduled for this week.
