Ottawa – As part of the Commute Smart Challenge, the City of Ottawa is encouraging residents to explore their sustainable transportation options and give them a try.

The challenge, which runs from September 15 to 21, urges residents to take a second look at their daily routine and see how trying different commuting options, including walking, cycling, skating, public transit, car sharing and carpooling, might save money, reduce stress, or help enhance an active and healthy lifestyle.

Those who take up the challenge can win travel-related prizes. By signing up at ottawa.ca, residents can earn points for each sustainable trip they take. Those points can be used to enter prize draws to win:

  • $500 Via Rail travel vouchers (four available)
  • A one-year free membership to VRTUCAR, plus 250 VRTUbucks
  • Two-night cycling packages for two at the Waring House in Prince Edward County (two available)
  • $200 pre-loaded e-Purse PRESTO cards (three available)
  • $50 pre-loaded e-Purse PRESTO cards (12 available)
  • Skateboard decks with custom artwork from Antique Skate Shop (two available)

Leading up to the Commute Smart Challenge week, residents are invited to take part in a street festival on Saturday, September 13. The festival will take place on Main Street between Hazel Street and Herridge Street and will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The festival will celebrate and profile sustainable transportation. It will showcase inventive and flexible ways to re-orient streets at off-peak times for other community uses. Event-goers will find information booths and enjoy family-friendly activities. Local businesses will also set up patios and offer sidewalk sales. Traffic detours will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
