Hundreds of firefighters from across Canada gathered in Ottawa Sunday morning to mark the deaths of nine firefighters who died from work-related illnesses or while responding to fires.
The ceremony, held this year at Ottawa’s memorial in LeBreton Flats, was the 11th annual national ceremony.
Ottawa West-Nepean member of parliament John Baird thanked firefighters for responding despite the danger, and referenced recent, dramatic fires in Lac-Mégantic and L’Isle-Verte.
“Firefighters in every region of this country distinguish themselves every day. Not only do you respond to urban fires and to forest fires, you also respond to car accidents, 911 calls for medical emergencies, floods, evacuations, hazardous material spills and … countless numbers of other emergency situations,” Baird said.
Ottawa’s memorial has almost 1,200 names inscribed on it, including the firefighters recognized Sunday. Their families were on hand to receive commemorative helmets.
The firefighters honoured Sunday were Firefighter Martin Walsh (Kennetcook District Fire Department, Nova Scotia), Randy Burch (Toronto Fire Services), David Cartmel (Brantford Fire Department), Antonius Lippers (Caledon Fire & Emergency), Sylvester Maj (Toronto Fire Services), John Mavity (Stratford Fire Department), Jon Enander (Lethbridge Fire), George Jones (British Columbia Wildfire Management) and Dave Hill (CFB Esquimalt Fire Rescue, BC).
