Ottawa Public Health has issued a warning to students at an Orléans high school who may have been exposed to tuberculosis last fall.

In a letter dated Sept. 12, public health wrote that Gise`le-Lalonde High School said students may have been exposed to the disease between Sept. 15, 2013 and Dec. 24, 2013.

Brenda MacLean, public health’s outbreak management unit program manager, said the agency didn’t know at the time that the person had tuberculosis.

MacLean wrote in the letter to students that tuberculosis is spread through the air when a person with the disease coughs. It takes up to eight weeks for your body to show that you have inhaled the bacteria.

Public health has set up tuberculosis skin tests for students at the school Oct. 6-8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
