Four children were admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario with what turned out to be an unusual respiratory virus that’s sweeping North America, the hospital said Wednesday.

All four recovered from the bug, called enterovirus D68 or (EV-D68, as it’s called for short), and went home before the tests came back from the national testing lab in Winnipeg. Testing takes about a week.

Ultimately, EV-D68 is a version of the common cold. As with most colds, most people’s immune systems defeat it with minimal trouble. Anybody can catch it, but this strain seems to be particularly tough on young children and people with asthma or other breathing difficulties. They can end up wheezing and struggling to breathe, and in rare cases need to be put on ventilators to recover.

“The treatment for this strain of the virus is the same as for other respiratory viruses that cause colds,” CHEO’s statement said. “There are no specific medications to treat them. CHEO is expecting to see more children with enterovirus D68 over the coming weeks.”

EV-D68 was first identified in California in 1962 and has broken out sporadically in small clusters since then. We’re in the middle of the first large-scale outbreak, which began in Kansas City and Chicago at about the same time in mid-August and has expanded rapidly since then, for reasons experts haven’t yet determined.

The usual precautions to protect against common colds are the best defence against EV-D68: regular handwashing and avoiding the coughs and sneezes of sick people.
