Ottawa primary students who are part of a Canada-wide program challenging them to use their “WITS” against bullying had a royal surprise at their swearing-in ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

As Denmark’s crown couple entered Centennial Public School’s gym, soft “oohs” and “aaahs” arose from the cluster of more than 50 Grades 1 and 2 students seated in the floor.

The royal couple helped to fasten on shirts the small badges with the four conflict resolution strategies scrawled in colourful writing: Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out, Seek help.

Centennial Public School in Ottawa is honoured to welcome their Royal Highnesses the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark. Their royal couple participated in the WITS swearing in ceremony. The swearing in ceremony encourages children to pledge their commitment to treating others with respect, kindness and empathy as they practice the WITS initiative.

Crown Princess Mary, who is active in anti-bullying education in her country, read from a colouring book on bullying as Crown Prince Frederick looked on.

“Sometimes it just takes one,” she said, ending her sentence with a smile as the kids chorused “one” with her.

“Stand up for each other,” she added — her own advice to the group.

Andrew Little led the assembly and has been instrumental in bringing the program the school.

“It’s very simple,” he said of the approach, making it an easy language for the students, teachers and parents to learn. “It gives you a common ground.”

The school was one of the first seven in Ottawa to start the program last year; the program now is in 60 schools.

Little said the biggest change he has seen is how the students talk about the issue and deal with conflict — and are perhaps less quick to call someone a bully.

“It’s a label,” he said. “But if it’s someone they’re able to deal with, they’re no longer a bully.”

But, Little said it has also given teachers and administration another scene to start a conversation with the students to help ferret out the true bullies, who he said can be hard to find.

“You make it visible,” he said.
